If the Frozen Pipes are Exposed

Keep the main water valve open (this is usually near the water meter) and apply heat on the pipe going toward the frozen area. Doing this can cause the water to flow out once the ice melts. The water pressure will force the ice out, and this is usually faster than shutting off the main valve and waiting for the ice inside to melt.Use a hairdryer but make sure you don't stand in open water. Leave the faucet opened as you heat the pipe towards the frozen area then back to melt the blockage. If it's very close to a wall, placing a cookie sheet behind the pipe will assist in thawing since the back side of the pipe leaning to the wall is difficult to reach.

Using a heat lamp (as mentioned in the previous section) can very much help. Again, use your cookie sheet to assist in heating the frozen pipe.A small portable heater is very powerful compared to a heating lamp or a hair dryer. Make sure that is has sufficient heat first before directing it on to the frozen pipe.Using an electric pipe heat tape is also efficient. It's a ribbon type of wrap which can be used to a frozen pipe. Wrap it on to the pipe and plug. Temperature is controlled by a thermostat and the best part is, you can leave it there to avoid freezing. Just make sure to unplug it when not needed.
